Geisha, also known as Geiko or Geigi are Japanese women who entertain through performing the ancient traditions of art, dance, and singing and are distinctively characterised by their wearing of Kimono and Oshiroi makeup.

The word Geisha consists of two Kanj (Gei) meaning art and (Sha) meaning "person" or "doer". The most literal translation of Geisha into English would be "artists" "performing artists" or "artisan". The word Geiko translates to "Women of Art".

The life of a Geisha is one of discipline and devotion to the art form. They were trained to write poems, dance, play musical instruments, be flawless in etiquette be soberly dressed, and look attractive.

A young girl in her late teens leaves her family for a career as a Geisha. She gets training for at least 6 months in a geisha community until she gains the traits of a Geisha. The trainees are known as Maiko and assist her senior and gradually she rises to qualify as a full Geisha.

The world of a Geisha is a closely-knit culture that holds the traditional culture and art form.

Please check my blog post on Geisha here.

In this painting, a Geisha is seen carrying a tray of fruits for the guests. The painting is an inspiration from traditional Japanese painting.

This Watercolour painting was done on Imperial size 300gsm (140 lb.) Cold Pressed Bockingford paper.

More paintings of Geisha inspired by the Japanese traditional painting style are available from this website.

Please read the Advisory to learn more about our process, shipping method, and caring tips for the artwork.
