This very popular painting is ageless. My painting is inspired by the oil painting of the same name by Johannes Vermeer. Vermeer was a reasonably respected painter during his lifetime which was during the late 17th century. After his death in 1675, he went into obscurity until 200 years later he was rediscovered. Vermeer is attributed with 66 paintings of which 34 are universally accepted to be created by him. Some of Vermeer's paintings are attributed to be done by painters who were more famous than Vermeer. One of the reasons for his obscurity was that he had a very limited number of patrons. He used bright and expensive colours. His paintings depict one or two figures lit by window light who are involved in domestic or recreational activities which are imbued with a poetic timelessness. Today Vermeer is acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age Baroque.
