“MANJUSHREE”. Oil on canvas (63.5x89 cm/ 25x 35 inches) inspired by the Tibetan Thangka style of Painting.
The “THANGKA” style of painting is a Tibetan Buddhist style of painting. The history dates back to the paintings in Ajanta caves and Mogao caves in China. The paintings were done on silk cloth and were preserved rolled and unrolled when displayed. This style was either painted on cloth or embroidered and typically small in size.
“MANJUSHREE” is the meditational deity and is considered a fully Enlighted Buddha as per Vajrayana Buddhism and is one of the thirteen Buddhas.
Manjushree is depicted as a male bodhisattva wielding a flaming sword in his right hand, representing the realisation of transcendent wisdom which cuts down ignorance and duality. The scripture supported by the lotus held in his left hand represents his attainment of ultimate realization from the blossoming of wisdom.
