“QUEEN WITH LOTUS AT NIGHT” is inspired by the Rajasthani or Rajput style of traditional painting.

The origin of this style of painting originates from the royal states of Rajasthan and was prevalent during the late 16th century and early 17th century. The Mughals also ruled the princely states of Rajasthan at this time thus most of the schools of Rajput paintings reflected strong Mughal influence.

The main themes of Rajasthani paintings revolved around the stories from the great epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata, the life of Krishna, landscapes, and humans. Rajput paintings were also done on the walls of palaces, inner chambers of forts, Havelis, etc.

Colours used for the paintings were derived from minerals, plant sources, conch shells, precious stones, gold, silver, etc.

There were different schools and styles of Rajput paintings that emerged. Notable among them were Bikaner School, Bundi-Kota Kalam School, Jaipur School, Kishengarh School, Marwar School, Mewar School, and Ragmala School. Each of these evolved a distinctive style. However, similarities and common features can still be found in the paintings of the territories.

This painting is of a Queen at her palace holding a lotus in the dark of the night. “QUEEN WITH LOTUS AT NIGHT” was done on Imperial size 300gsm (140 lb.) Cold Pressed Bockingford paper with Watercolour.

This painting is based on the traditional Rajasthani or Rajput style of painting.
